Deals

Smart home gear goes on sale all the time, but not every discount is a good deal. This is where we collect the ones worth a look, plus a few tips so you can judge for yourself.

How to spot a deal that is actually good

Check the standard first

A cheap gadget that only works with one app is not a bargain. Look for Matter, Thread, Zigbee or Z-Wave support so it plays nicely with what you already own.

See if it needs a hub

Some deals only cover the sensor. If it needs a separate bridge to work, add that to the price before you decide.

Know the usual price

A big crossed out number means little. Check what it normally sells for before you get excited.

Look at the return window

Smart home gear can be fussy. A shop with an easy return policy takes the risk out of trying something new.

Last year’s model is often fine

Older models are often the best value, as long as they still get software updates and security fixes.

Start small

Buy one device, live with it for a week, then expand. It beats ending up with three gadgets that do not talk to each other.

Prices and stock change fast. Always check the current price at the shop before you buy.
