Wemo was one of the first big names in cheap smart plugs. On January 31, 2026, Belkin switched off the Wemo cloud, and most Wemo gear lost its smarts overnight. A few models survived. Here is what happened and what you can still do.
What happened
Belkin announced in 2025 that it would end support for older Wemo products and shut down the cloud they depend on. Most Wemo devices were built to talk to Belkin’s servers for almost everything, so when the servers went dark, so did the app, remote control and voice assistant support.
Belkin offered partial refunds for affected devices that were still under warranty, but very few products qualified.
What still works
- Four Thread models (WLS0503, WSC010, WSP100 and WDC010) keep working in Apple Home, which runs them locally. Belkin never shipped the Matter update it had promised for them.
- Wemo devices set up in Apple Home before January 31, 2026 keep working there, because Apple Home controls them on your own network.
- Home Assistant has a Wemo integration that runs locally, so tinkerers may be able to keep basic on and off control.
If you still own Wemo gear
- Flip the device over and find the model number.
- If it is one of the four Thread models, keep it in Apple Home and carry on.
- If it is already in Apple Home, leave it there. Do not factory reset it. Since the shutdown, you can no longer add a Wemo device to Apple Home.
- Everything else: try Home Assistant if you like tinkering, or swap it for a Matter smart plug or switch.
The lesson
The Wemo devices that survived were the ones that did not need Belkin’s cloud. That is the single best thing to look for when you buy anything smart.
