SmartThings is Samsung’s smart home platform, built into its app, hubs, TVs and appliances. It is one of the more open big platforms, and a lot of it can now run locally on a SmartThings hub.

- Our estimate92%
The good news: Samsung is huge and builds SmartThings into almost everything it sells, so the platform is not in danger. Its newer Edge drivers let many Zigbee and Z-Wave devices and automations run on the hub itself, without a trip to Samsung’s servers, and it supports Matter.
The bad news: SmartThings has made people rebuild before. Samsung ended support for its first-generation hub in 2021 and retired its old Groovy platform, which broke a lot of custom integrations that power users had set up. Nothing you buy today depends on those, but it shows Samsung is willing to make big changes.
If you use SmartThings
- Use a SmartThings hub, so local automations keep running when your internet is down.
- Pick Zigbee, Z-Wave or Matter devices over Wi-Fi gadgets that need their own company’s cloud.
- If you still rely on an old custom integration, check that it has a newer Edge driver version.
