ecobee makes some of the most popular smart thermostats in North America. It has been at it since 2008 and treats old hardware better than most.

The good news: Ecobee supported its very first thermostats for about 16 years before cutting their cloud connection in July 2024, and it offered owners 30% off a new model. Even after that, those thermostats kept heating and cooling the house. Newer ecobees also work with Apple Home, which keeps local control alive if ecobee’s cloud ever goes away.

The bad news: The 2024 cutoff shows ecobee will end support for old models eventually. And as part of Generac, a generator and energy company, its future depends on how much its parent wants to keep investing in thermostats.

If you own an ecobee

  • Add your thermostat to Apple Home, or to Home Assistant through HomeKit, as a backup way to control it.
  • If you still have an original ecobee Smart or EMS, it no longer connects to ecobee’s servers, so it is time to plan a replacement.
