Shelly makes small relays that fit behind existing light switches and outlets, plus plugs, sensors and energy meters. It is a favorite of Home Assistant users because its devices work on your own network without any cloud.

The good news: Every Shelly device has its own local web page and an open API, so it keeps working with or without Shelly’s cloud. That is why Home Assistant and other local systems support it so well. Its buyer, Schneider Electric, is one of Europe’s biggest electrical companies and plans to keep Shelly’s team and headquarters in Bulgaria for at least three years.
The bad news: Schneider has its own smart home line, Wiser, and has not promised to keep Shelly’s open, local-first approach. Devices you already own will keep working locally, but future products could lean more on the cloud.
If you own Shelly
- Set your devices up for local control, through Home Assistant or the device’s own web page, so they never depend on Shelly’s cloud.
- Watch the first new products and firmware after the Schneider deal closes. If local control disappears from the documentation, that is the warning sign.
