eero makes mesh Wi-Fi systems: a few small routers that spread Wi-Fi around your home. Amazon bought the company in 2019, and newer models double as Thread and Matter hubs for smart home gear.

The good news: Eero is one of the few smart home brands that publishes how long each model gets security updates, and it promises at least five years. When updates end, the router keeps working. Amazon also uses eero as a Thread and Matter hub, which gives it a bigger role in its smart home plans.

The bad news: There is no local web page to manage your network: you need the eero app and an internet connection to change settings. Some features, like ad blocking and parental controls, sit behind the eero Plus subscription.

If you own eero

  • Check your model’s update end date on eero’s security update page before buying extra units to add to your system.
  • If you use eero as your Thread network, also add your Matter devices to Apple Home, Google Home or Alexa, so they are not tied to your router.
