August makes smart locks that fit over the inside of your existing deadbolt, so you keep your keys. It has had two owners: Assa Abloy bought it in 2017 and sold it, together with Yale, to Fortune Brands in 2023.

The good news: Fortune Brands is a large company that also owns Yale, Moen and Master Lock, and it has kept selling August locks since buying the brand. The lock works over Bluetooth from your phone, and your original key and the thumb-turn always work.

The bad news: August has had little new hardware in recent years, while Yale gets the new features, including Matter. That raises the question of whether August will be folded into Yale one day. The locks would most likely keep working, but the app could change, as it already did for owners outside North America.

If you own August

  • Your original key always works, because an August lock fits over your existing deadbolt.
  • If you want Matter, look at Yale’s newer locks instead. They run on the same app platform.
