Google Home is Google’s smart home platform: the Google Home app, the voice assistant on its speakers and displays, and the hubs that run Matter devices. Between 2025 and 2026, Google replaced Google Assistant with Gemini on these devices.

Sister brandGoogle Nest, which has its own file in this tracker
Matter supportYes. Many Nest speakers, displays and Wi-Fi points work as Matter hubs
Needs the cloud?Mostly. Voice requests and most app control go through Google, though some Matter devices can run locally
Subscription for basics? No. Google Home Premium (from $10 a month) adds Gemini Live, advanced automations and camera history
Recent changesGemini replaced Google Assistant, and the Nest Mini and Nest Audio were discontinued in 2026
How long devices get supportMixed. Older speakers like the original Google Home still got Gemini, and in July 2026 Gemini Live reached the first Home Mini and Nest Hub for Google Home Premium subscribers. But Google has switched off many smart home products over the years, from the Revolv hub to Works with Nest.

Why 81%

  • Starting point94%A tech giant that is clearly staying in smart home.
  • Track record−12The same Google record: Revolv, Works with Nest, Nest Secure, Dropcam and the first Nest thermostats were all switched off.
  • Works without the cloud−1Voice and most control run through Google’s cloud, and only some Matter devices work locally.

The good news: Google is putting a lot into Google Home right now: Gemini on its speakers, a new Google Home Speaker in 2026 and Matter support across its hubs. Even its oldest speakers got the Gemini upgrade, which is better treatment than many brands give older gear.

The bad news: No company in this tracker has switched off more smart home products than Google. Google Home itself is too central to kill, but individual devices, features and integrations can disappear, and more features now sit behind Google Home Premium.

If you own Google Home

  • Use Matter devices where you can, so you could move them to another system like Apple Home or Home Assistant if you ever leave Google.
  • Check what you actually need before paying for Google Home Premium. Basic control and routines stay free.
