The good news: Rain Bird is one of the biggest names in irrigation, and it is keeping Rachio as its own brand with the same app and the same CEO. A buyer with that much at stake in sprinklers has every reason to keep Rachio running.

The bad news: Rachio has dropped things before: Apple HomeKit support in 2022, and updates for its first-generation controllers in 2024. Everything runs through its cloud, and it does not support Matter, so there is no easy way around Rachio’s app.

If you own Rachio

  • If you have a first-generation controller, it still works but gets no more updates. Rachio has offered owners discounts on newer models before.
  • Write down your zones and watering times, so you could move to another controller quickly if you ever need to.
