The good news: Insteon switches talk to each other locally, so a lot still works without the internet, and Home Assistant can control them on your own network. The new owners brought the service back after the 2022 shutdown.

The bad news: In April 2022, Insteon shut down without warning, and owners woke up to an app that no longer worked. The revived company is small and charges a yearly fee to use the app.

If you own Insteon

  • Connect your hub to Home Assistant, so you have local control that does not depend on Insteon’s servers.
  • Back up your hub’s device links if you can, so you can rebuild your setup.
