The first Nest Learning Thermostat came out in 2011 and helped start the smart home boom. On October 25, 2025, Google ended support for the 1st and 2nd generation models. They still heat and cool your home, but the smart part is gone.
What happened
Google announced in April 2025 that the oldest Nest Learning Thermostats would lose support. From October 25, 2025, they can no longer connect to Google’s servers, so you cannot change them from your phone or by voice.
In the US, Google offered owners $130 off a 4th gen Nest Learning Thermostat, and CA$160 off in Canada. Google has no new Nest thermostat for Europe and pointed owners there to other brands instead.
What still works
- Heating and cooling work as normal.
- Temperature changes and schedules made on the thermostat’s own dial and screen.
- The thermostat no longer gets security fixes, so it is best treated as a regular thermostat.
If you still own a 1st or 2nd gen Nest
- Set your schedule on the thermostat itself, since the app no longer reaches it.
- Remove it from your Google Home routines so they do not fail silently.
- If you want app control back, replace it. Many current thermostats also work through Matter, so they are not tied to one company’s app.
- Keep the base plate wiring labels when you swap it out.
The lesson
Even a tech giant switches off older hardware. Devices that keep doing their main job offline, like these thermostats, age far better than ones that stop working entirely.
