JuiceBox was one of the most popular home EV chargers in North America. In October 2024, its maker Enel X Way shut down its North American business, and about 100,000 home chargers lost their smart features.
What happened
Enel X Way announced on October 2, 2024, that it was leaving the US and Canada. The software behind JuiceBox chargers was put at risk, and staff were laid off.
After an auction, VoltiE Group bought the North American assets. It said the old JuiceBox network would run until the end of April 2025 and that chargers would then need to move to VoltiE’s platform. Business owners could move some chargers to other software, but home owners had few options.
What still works
- Charging. A JuiceBox still charges your car as a basic Level 2 charger.
- Your car’s own app and charging schedule work as usual.
If you still own a JuiceBox charger
- Use your car’s own app to schedule charging for cheaper hours.
- If your utility paid you for smart charging through JuiceBox, ask it about other approved chargers.
- Check with VoltiE whether your model can join its platform before you replace anything.
- If you replace it, choose a charger that supports open standards like OCPP, so it can move to other software.
The lesson
The charger kept charging, which is the part that matters most. Hardware that does its main job without the cloud is the safest kind of smart device.
