ADT is the best-known alarm company in the US and has been around since 1874. Most customers get a professionally installed system with a monthly monitoring contract, and ADT also sells DIY kits. It is not going anywhere, but it changes products and partners often.
Why 84%
- Starting point90%A large, established company, around since 1874.
- Track record−4ADT has replaced its DIY line several times, dropped Blue by ADT and removed some Google Nest features.
- Works without the cloud−2The panel works locally, but app control and monitoring need ADT’s cloud and usually a contract.

The good news: ADT has millions of customers paying every month, and two of the biggest names in smart home want to work with it: Google invested in it in 2020, and in October 2026 Apple chose ADT to install its new HomeView hub. A company in that position is very unlikely to switch its systems off.
The bad news: ADT changes direction a lot. It rebranded its LifeShield DIY gear as Blue by ADT, later dropped that, moved on to ADT Self Setup and, in 2026, launched ADT Blu. It also removed features that depended on Google Nest devices. Your alarm will most likely keep working, but the app and the features around it may look quite different in a few years.
If you own ADT
- Check how long your monitoring contract runs before you change or cancel anything.
- If your system uses Google Nest devices, check which features still work in the ADT app after the 2026 changes.
- Before buying add-ons, ask ADT whether they work with your panel, since its different DIY lines do not all mix.
