The good news: Aqara’s sensors use Zigbee or Thread instead of Wi-Fi, so they lean on a hub in your home rather than a server in the cloud. Its hubs can pass them on to Matter, which means Apple Home, Google Home or Home Assistant can control them without Aqara’s app. More than 30 of its products are sold in Apple stores.

The bad news: Aqara has reported losses, though these come mostly from how it accounts for investor shares rather than from the business itself. About a third of its sales come from making products for Xiaomi, so a change in that relationship would hurt. Setup also still runs through the Aqara app and account.

If you own Aqara

  • Bridge your Aqara devices to Matter, so they show up directly in Apple Home, Google Home or Home Assistant.
  • For the most local setup, pair the sensors with a Zigbee hub you control, like Home Assistant, which supports most Aqara sensors.
