Chromecast was Google’s cheap streaming dongle for more than a decade. Google stopped making it in 2024 and replaced it with the Google TV Streamer, and in March 2025 an expired certificate knocked older models offline for days.

The good news: Google fixed the March 2025 certificate problem within days, and Chromecasts with Google TV still get updates. Casting is built into countless apps, so Google has reasons to keep it working.

The bad news: Chromecast is discontinued, and the 2025 outage showed that older models can stop working because of a certificate nobody renewed. Google also has the worst record in this tracker for switching off its own products.

If you own Chromecast

  • Do not factory reset an older Chromecast during an outage, since that can make things worse.
  • If you are buying new, the Google TV Streamer or a TV with Google Cast built in will be supported longer.
