Google Nest covers Google’s smart speakers, displays, thermostats, cameras and doorbells. It works well day to day, but no big company in this tracker has switched off more of its own smart home products.

The good news: Google keeps investing here. In 2025 it started replacing Google Assistant with Gemini on its speakers and displays and turned Nest Aware into a new Google Home Premium subscription. Its hubs support Matter and Thread, so plenty of the gear you control from Google Home could move to another platform.
The bad news is the track record. Google shut down the Revolv hub in 2016, the Nest Secure alarm and Dropcam cameras in April 2024, and cloud support for the first two Nest Learning Thermostats in October 2025. It also stopped making the Nest Protect smoke alarm in 2025 and handed that job to First Alert, though existing Nest Protects are still supported.
If you use Google Nest
- Use the Google Home app. Google is moving everything there, and older devices need to be moved over from the Nest app to get new features.
- Check Google’s support pages for your device’s guaranteed update date, so a shutdown does not catch you by surprise.
- For anything new, pick Matter devices. They work in Google Home today and can move to Apple Home or SmartThings later.
