Kwikset is one of the most common lock brands in American homes. Since 2023 it has been owned by Assa Abloy, the world’s biggest lock maker. Its newest smart locks support Matter, but in 2025 it switched off the app for its older Kevo locks.

The good news: Kwikset’s owner is huge and fully committed to smart locks, and the newest models use Matter, so they work with Apple Home, Google Home and other systems without Kwikset’s app. Even when the Kevo app was switched off, the locks kept working as normal locks, and owners got $80 to $130 off a replacement.

The bad news: The Kevo shutdown shows that Kwikset will end an app once a product line gets old. Wi-Fi Halo locks that rely on Kwikset’s own app could face the same in the long run.

If you own Kwikset

  • If you still have a Kevo lock, it works with its key and key fob, but remote control is gone. A Matter lock is the safer replacement.
  • When buying new, pick a Matter model like the Halo Select or Aura Reach.
