Level makes smart locks that hide inside your door, so from the outside it looks like a normal lock. Assa Abloy, the world’s biggest lock maker, bought Level’s lock business in 2024.

The good news: Since the sale, Level has the backing of the biggest company in locks, and it keeps adding Matter, including to locks people already own. Its locks work over Bluetooth and Apple Home without Level’s cloud, and your regular key always works.
The bad news: Only the Level Lock+ and Level Bolt can be upgraded to Matter, so other older models stay tied to Bluetooth and Level’s app. The Matter upgrade also cannot be undone. In June 2026, Assa Abloy laid off most of Level’s team, including its founders, and folded Level into Kwikset. It says it will keep selling and supporting Level locks.
If you own Level
- If you have a Lock+ or Bolt, consider the Matter update, so you can use the lock with Google Home, Alexa or SmartThings as well as Apple Home.
- Keep a spare key somewhere safe, since the lock still works with your normal key.
