The good news: Hue bulbs use Zigbee, an open standard, and the Hue Bridge controls them locally. If Signify ever shut down its cloud, your lights would keep working at home and in apps like Apple Home or Home Assistant.
The bad news: Signify has made a few unpopular moves. The first-generation Hue Bridge lost cloud support in 2020, and since 2023 Hue has pushed users to create an account to use its app, a change many longtime owners did not want.
If you own Hue
- Use the Hue Bridge rather than Bluetooth-only control. The bridge is what keeps everything local.
- Add the bridge to Apple Home, Google Home or Home Assistant as a backup way to control your lights, no Hue account needed.
