Schlage is one of America’s best-known lock brands, founded in 1920 and now owned by Allegion. Its smart locks range from Wi-Fi models to Z-Wave and Matter locks, and all of them still take a physical key.

The good news: Schlage has made locks for over a century, and its owner Allegion is a large, profitable company. Even its older smart locks are still supported, and the keypad and key work no matter what happens to the app. The new Sense Pro adds Matter over Thread, so it works with Apple Home, Google Home and other Matter systems without Schlage’s cloud.
The bad news: Its most popular Wi-Fi locks, the Encode line, rely on the Schlage Home app and cloud for remote control and do not support Matter.
If you own Schlage
- If you want local control, pick a Z-Wave model or the Matter-ready Sense Pro.
- Keep the backup key somewhere you can reach it, in case the batteries die.
