tado makes smart thermostats and radiator valves and is one of the biggest names in smart heating. It is alive and doing better than it was, but it has given owners one real scare, which is why it scores lower than you might expect.

The good news: Tado says it reached profitability for the first time, after years of losses, and it now has more than 5.5 million thermostats installed. Its newer tado X products support Matter, so they can be controlled from Apple Home, Google Home and other apps without going through tado.
The red flag: in early 2025, some tado owners saw messages saying the tado app would soon cost about €1 a month. After the backlash, tado called it a marketing test and the app stayed free. It never happened, but it showed that a company can try to charge for features you already paid for.
If you own tado
- Connect your tado gear to Apple Home, Google Home or another Matter app as a backup, even if you mostly use the tado app.
- Know what you would lose without the tado app: the full schedule editor and some automatic features live there.
- Shopping in the US? tado mostly sells in Europe, so you are more likely to be choosing between brands like ecobee and Google Nest.
