The good news: TP-Link is one of the biggest networking companies in the world, and Tapo is now where it puts its smart home effort. Cameras save video to a memory card with no subscription needed, and many plugs and bulbs support Matter.

The bad news: Since 2024, US agencies have been weighing a ban on TP-Link products, and in late 2025 several of them backed a ban on its routers. It is not clear whether smart home gear would be covered, and no ban had taken effect when we last checked. In 2026 the FCC barred new foreign-made routers, which affects TP-Link routers but not smart plugs or cameras, and Texas sued TP-Link over its China ties and data collection.

If you own Tapo

  • Put a memory card in your cameras, so recordings stay at home whatever happens to TP-Link’s cloud.
  • Pick Matter versions of plugs and bulbs, and add them to Apple Home, Google Home or Home Assistant.
