The Shrinking Satellite Footprint
The SpaceX satellite internet service recently introduced its latest residential kit. Meet the Starlink V5: lighter and tougher than any previous home terminal. It represents a massive upgrade in terms of size and convenience. This kit lets users connect to the network using a much smaller footprint. The hardware is currently rolling out in select areas, with wider availability coming soon. While it looks like the portable Starlink Mini, it is strictly designed for fixed home use. It is not intended to be used while in motion.
Why You Should Care About Power
If you have ever wanted to set up internet at a remote home, older satellite dishes were pretty bulky and power-hungry. The Starlink V5 cuts the average power consumption down to just 35 to 50 watts. That is basically half of what the older V4 terminals consumed. This much lower power draw means it plays extremely well with portable power stations or off-grid solar setups. It is ideal for keeping communications alive during blackouts or emergencies. In fact, Tokyo has even experimented with putting Starlink antennas on fire hydrant signs to provide emergency Wi-Fi.

It is a tiny bit slower than the older model because it tops out at 375+ Mbps, but that is still plenty of speed for streaming 4K video, video calling, and gaming.
Built Tough for DIY Installs
Even though the V5 terminal is much smaller and lighter at just 2.4 pounds, it is incredibly tough. It is rated to withstand winds up to 165 mph, making it perfect for areas frequently battered by storms. The kit also makes setting things up much easier for users who prefer to DIY their smart home network. The V5 now includes a pipe adapter mount right in the box, which clamps directly to metal poles. It also comes with the new Wi-Fi 6 Router Mini, which has excellent range and an integrated stand.
