The Shelly Buyout Rumors Are True
If you have spent any time tinkering with your smart home setup, you probably have a few Shelly relays tucked away behind your light switches. The Bulgarian company has built a massive following by offering affordable, highly reliable, and strictly local smart home control. However, that independent streak might be changing. After a flurry of market rumors, Shelly Group has officially confirmed they are in “exploratory talks” regarding a potential acquisition by the French industrial giant, Schneider Electric.
Why Schneider Wants Shelly
Schneider Electric is a global powerhouse when it comes to traditional electrical components and industrial tech, but they lack a strong, passionate foothold in the modern consumer smart home space. That is exactly where Shelly shines.
Shelly devices are beloved because they process commands locally over your own Wi-Fi network rather than relying on a slow external cloud server. When you press a button, the light turns on instantly. Schneider clearly wants to integrate that fast, responsive, and consumer-friendly technology into its own massive portfolio. Shelly has also been modernizing its lineup rapidly, recently committing to the Matter over Thread standard, which makes their hardware highly appealing to larger companies looking for future-proof technology.
What Happens to the Open Ecosystem?
For everyday users, an acquisition of this scale is a double-edged sword. On one hand, Schneider Electric’s massive financial backing could fund incredible research and development, leading to even smaller relays or more advanced energy-monitoring tools.
On the flip side, the core reason Shelly is so popular is its open nature. You can use the devices without forced subscriptions, you can flash custom firmware, and you can keep all your data entirely local. The big question is whether Schneider Electric understands that this open philosophy is the secret to Shelly’s success, or if they will try to lock the ecosystem down. The talks are still in the very early stages, and there is no guarantee a final deal will be reached, so we will be watching this one closely!
