Keeping all your smart home gadgets playing nicely together just got a lot easier if you use a Homey hub. The popular smart home platform has officially earned its Matter 1.5 certification. This update bridges the gap between new energy tech and the older smart devices you already own.
What Actually Happened
Homey, which is the smart home platform developed by Athom and now owned by LG, recently announced that its hubs are fully certified for Matter 1.5. This software certification covers the Homey Pro models released between 2023 and 2026, the Homey Pro mini, and the Homey Self-Hosted Server. Because the Homey Pro and Homey Pro mini already include internal Thread Border Routers, they are completely ready to connect with the newest Matter devices over your local network.
Why You Should Care
If you are heavily invested in smart home tech, you probably have a mix of old and new devices. The biggest benefit of this update is how it handles gadgets that do not speak Matter natively. Homey features a special Homey Matter Bridge application. This tool takes your older accessories that use older signals like Zigbee, Z-Wave, or standard Bluetooth, and translates those signals. This allows those older accessories to show up as standard Matter devices inside other systems like Apple Home or Google Home. You get to keep using the gear you already bought without needing to replace it all.
The Essential Technical Details
The leap to Matter 1.5 brings several new device categories into the fold. While earlier versions focused heavily on smart lighting and door locks, this new standard allows Homey to natively control electric vehicle chargers, heat pumps, and solar panels. This pushes the platform firmly into full-scale energy management. If you use the Homey Self-Hosted Server, you will need a separate Thread Border Router on your network to get these features, but the main hardware hubs have everything built right in.
