Smart Home Shutdown Tracker

Smart home gear has an expiry date. It just is not printed on the box. This tracker keeps tabs on smart home brands: who is behind them, which ones already shut down, and how likely the rest are to keep working in the years ahead.

Click any brand to open its file: who runs it, what still works without the cloud, and what to do if you own its devices.

How to read the tracker

Alive

The company is still selling and supporting it. Updates and the app keep coming.

At risk

Still working, but something worries us: money trouble, a sale, outages, or features moving behind a paywall.

Shut down

The cloud, app or support is gone. Some devices may still work locally, and the brand file says how.

What the percentage means

The percentage is our estimate of how likely it is that a brand’s devices still do their main smart job, like app control and automations, at the end of 2029. It is not a guarantee, and we update it when things change. Shut-down brands show 0%, and brands we have not worked out yet show a question mark.

Every estimate starts from how solid the company behind the brand is:

  • 94%: a tech giant that is clearly staying in smart home, like Apple, Amazon, Google or Samsung.
  • 90%: a large, established company, or a brand owned by one.
  • 86%: an established mid-size company.
  • 80%: a smaller or loss-making company, or a brand that was just sold.
  • 70%: a brand that recently went through bankruptcy.
  • 55%: a brand in serious trouble, like long outages and little communication.

Then we adjust it:

  • Track record: up to 12 points off for killing products early, breaking features or charging for things owners already had.
  • Works without the cloud: from 5 points off for cloud-only, subscription-locked gear to 4 points on for devices that keep working locally or through Matter.
  • Other risks: for example, a proposed government sales ban.

Green means 85% or higher, orange 70 to 84%, and red below 70%. Every brand file shows the exact math behind its number.
